Who we are

About us

At Help a Child (Africa), we’ve been supporting children in Liberia since 2006. Right now, we’re funding children to attend St. Patrick’s School in Grand Cess and helping students pursue college in Pleebo and Harper.

Our story began in High Wycombe’s Catholic community. We were inspired by Father Sam Ofia, a priest from the Missionary Society of St. Paul who during his year-long ministry at St. Augustine’s parish, shared moving stories of struggle and poverty from his time in Liberia. His words spurred us to act.

In 2006, local churches came together, sending a container of donated goods to support Father Sam’s former parishioners in Grand Cess.

Later that same year, our founder Clive visited Liberia with Father Sam and saw firsthand the challenges children faced, many working daily on allotments and with fishermen to help their families survive, the percentage of children with no possibility of an education was over 50% (100 plus in the village of Grancess alone).

Moved by this, Clive returned with a mission: fill the 100 empty school places in St Patricks School. That’s when Help a Child (Africa) was born.

Since then, we’ve funded over 2,000 yearly scholarships with children attending St. Patrick’s School, and college. From 2010 to 2017, we also supported four children with additional needs in Monrovia, Liberia’s capital, and children’s school uniforms in Nigeria.
